Despite living in a hugely digital world, many millennials have been getting back to basics, using an analogue journal rather than their smartphones to journal and document their lives through a system called bullet journaling. Bullet journaling employs the use of bullet points over long-hand sentences as its main structure, which keeps the journal concise, easily followed and perfectly indexed.

At first, it may sound complicated and time-consuming, but this “new” way of planning and recording the lives of the users, away from social networking platforms, has had not only a calming effect on mental health but has boosted the creativity and motivation of many journalers. The easiest way to start your bullet journal is to dive in with these 3 easy steps:

1. Get a good hardback notebook

These do not have to be expensive or overly fancy, but a hardback cover is a good investment for bullet journals. As so much work goes into creating and maintaining the contents, it would be a shame to destroy your hard work with dog-eared pages or wear and tear from sitting in bags all day. A good hardback cover, such as that on the Q-Connect A6 Manuscript Book, is a great start and will keep you motivated along your bullet journalling journey.

2. Invest in some high-quality stationery

If you type “bullet journal” into Pinterest or Google, you will find a myriad of styles, page templates and, above all, beautifully drawn and painstakingly crafted calligraphy on other bullet journalers pages. This is not a necessary step in the journaling, but it is worth your while investing in some high-quality stationery such as brightly coloured pens, highlighters or even a good fountain pen to decorate your journal. The more you personalise your journal, the likelier you are to continue to use it and continue to boost your creativity.

3. Don’t get too precious, it’s only a book!

As with all new ventures, mistakes will be made (in pen) and lessons will be learned the hard way. Do not use Tippex, it will only make it look worse; instead, embrace the error and simply cross through it. Bullet journalling should be a way for you to relieve anxiety, so lighten up on the pressure for perfection. Remember to have fun with your journaling, never take it too seriously and even if it is only to keep you off of Facebook for 20 minutes every day, try and keep up with your new habit. Who knows what creativity you will unleash!
